Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is often equated with heartburn, whereas both are different. In the case of GERD, stomach acid with a very high degree of acidity, out of the stomach into the esophagus (reflux). Patients with this disease often complain of great pain in the stomach and epigastrium, followed by nausea and heartburn (hot chest burning), difficulty swallowing, sore throat, belching, vomiting, and sour or bitter taste in the mouth.

GERD can also cause heart rhythm disturbance and chest pain, so it is often mistaken for heart disease. Some of the following conditions can increase the risk of GERD, such as ulcer disease, asthma, diabetes, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated, and stress.

GERD itself is caused by LES dysfunction (Lower esophageal sphincter). Normally, this muscle ring works in opening or closing the gastric door so that when food has entered the stomach, the food does not return to the esophagus. However, in people with GERD, this function does not work well.

Causes of GERD
GERD is caused because the lower esophageal sphincter muscles do not function normally.
This condition can also be caused by the intake and eating habits of a person.
Eating spicy foods, frying, eating heavy at night, immediately lying down or bending over a meal can trigger GERD.
On the other hand, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity is also called the primary cause of this condition.
GERD is also common in pregnant women because of the increase in uterine size and weight, thus putting pressure on the stomach.
Hormonal changes in the body can also cause GERD.

Several studies have shown acid reflux to occur due to bacteria in the stomach. Because coconut oil has the anti-bacterial function, consuming coconut oil can reduce bacteria. Also, its function that lines the stomach wall and esophagus reduce pain.
